One Hundred Essential Missouri Fiddle Tunes

One Hundred Essential Missouri Fiddle Tunes

by Charlie Walden

Introduction – This page first went “live” in 2002. The original list was drafted in response to numerous requests from people new to Missouri fiddle playing as to which tunes they should learn. Since that time tunes have come in and out of vogue and most of the old fiddlers from my youth have passed on, replaced by young lions that are interested in different set of melodies. So, I’ve tried to update the list taking these circumstances into account. That said, I’ve kept some of the more obscure tunes from the original in the hope that current players will be encouraged to pick them up. The old list appears at the bottom of this page.

Where tunes are concerned, Missouri fiddlers go for quantity as well as quality. Even the average fiddler in Missouri can be expected to play over 100 tunes. Better players can render several hundred pieces from memory. The ability to play continuously for a long period of time without repeating a tune is an important hallmark of a master Missouri fiddler.

For a tune to qualify for the list below, it had to be one that I played (which is a significant limitation in itself), and it had to be either of Missouri origin (to my knowledge) or be very commonly heard in the state. See how many you recognize. If you want to be a true traditional Missouri fiddler I encourage you to add those you don’t know to your repertoire.
